Many people have a fear that as they get older, they may lose their teeth. A lot of people fear the idea of needing dentures, or have concerns that their smiles may become less attractive over time due to one or many missing teeth. Fortunately, if you have one or more missing teeth there are several ways to replace them. Dentures or bridgework are an option, but dental implants are often the best choice. Dental implants are a safe, permanent and effective solution to replace one or many missing teeth.
What are Dental Implants?
A common misconception is that an implant is a tooth. In simplified terms, a dental implant is an artificial root made from titanium, or sometimes ceramic that is permanently placed into the jaw bone which then supports an artificial tooth or a permanent bridge or denture.
Dental implants are an affordable, reliable, and permanent way to replace one or more missing teeth.
Can I have Dental Implants?
Most people are good candidates for dental implants. Some important factors are good general and good dental health; these are important aspects in determining the outcome of a dental implant procedure. Additionally, the proper amount of bone in your jaw is necessary but often if there is not sufficient bone in the area, a bone graft may be done to provide enough support for the implant. A special 3D x-ray (CBCT) is used to allow the dentist to see how much bone you have and if grafting is necessary prior to implant placement.
What is involved in the procedure?
Under local anesthetic (freezing) and with sedation if desired, the dentist will place small titanium “root” into the bone. The implant must then be allowed to heal and fuse to the bone for two to four months.. After a period of healing (osseointegration) the implant is uncovered and a digital impression is taken to fabricate the tooth or denture.
How do I care for my dental implants?
A dental implant, like any natural tooth can have gum disease. Proper home care and regular dental visits are required in order to keep your implants looking great and functioning well.
